I would say “hiding the rust”, but if that were the case, there isn’t enough of them. :P

I knew someone who used to have a few of these. As boy scouts, we rode around in the back of the truck (whichever one was running at the time) to deliver sand bags to various service stations. I remember someone grabbing a ski pole (which also happened to be in the box of the truck), and poking it through a large hole in the rust far enough to touch the road while we were driving.

To see one of these in a non-rusty state = rare (at least up here).
